Jagex raises the stakes in Gielinor with a permanent new game mode featuring single-life characters, a separate economy and exclusive challenges with real-world rewards.
Old School RuneScape has officially launched Hardcore Worlds, a new permanent game mode that challenges players to survive the dangers of Gielinor with just one life.
Available from 4 November 2026, the new mode takes the familiar RuneScape experience and introduces a significant twist: when your character dies, there’s no traditional respawn to send you straight back into the action.
Instead, death brings your Hardcore Worlds adventure to an end, forcing you to decide whether to start again or continue your journey in the main game.
Developed by Cambridge-based Jagex, the update is designed to provide experienced adventurers with a fresh challenge while retaining the core gameplay systems that have defined Old School RuneScape for years.
One Life, One Chance to Survive
Hardcore Worlds introduces a simple but unforgiving rule: every character gets just one life.
Whether you’re exploring dangerous dungeons, fighting powerful bosses or venturing into the Wilderness, a single fatal mistake can end your run.
Unlike traditional Hardcore Ironman, however, Hardcore Worlds allows players to trade freely and make use of the Grand Exchange, meaning players can still participate in a functioning multiplayer economy.
The mode operates separately from the main game, with its own economy and community of adventurers attempting to survive for as long as possible.
There are no boosted experience rates or increased item drop chances, either.
Players progress at the same pace as they would in regular Old School RuneScape, making survival and careful preparation essential.
What Happens When You Die?
Death doesn’t necessarily mean losing your character forever, but it does mean your Hardcore Worlds journey is over.
When a character dies, the Reaper presents two options.
Reset and try again
Players can reset their character and begin a fresh Hardcore Worlds adventure, sacrificing their previous progress for another opportunity to survive.
Transfer to the main game
Alternatively, players can leave Hardcore Worlds permanently and move their character into the regular version of Old School RuneScape.
This option allows players to retain their skills, progression and eligible equipment, although items that would normally be lost on death will still be lost.
Once transferred, the character cannot return to Hardcore Worlds.
The system ensures that a fatal mistake carries genuine consequences while giving players the choice to continue their adventure elsewhere.
A Separate Economy with Familiar Gameplay
Although Hardcore Worlds introduces far greater risk, Jagex has kept much of the familiar RuneScape experience intact.
Players can gather resources, develop skills, trade with other adventurers and use the Grand Exchange.
The biggest difference is how much each decision matters.
A risky boss encounter or dangerous expedition could potentially cost dozens of hours of progress, encouraging players to think carefully before taking unnecessary risks.
With the economy separated from the main game, adventurers will also have to establish their own supply chains, markets and trading opportunities as the new worlds develop.
Hardcore Worlds is a permanent addition rather than a temporary seasonal event, giving players the opportunity to take on the challenge beyond its launch celebrations.
Reaper’s Raffle Offers Real-World Prizes
To celebrate the launch, Jagex has introduced Reaper’s Raffle, a special event allowing Hardcore Worlds players to compete for physical rewards.
Running from 4–30 November 2026, the event challenges players to complete objectives set by Death, the game’s familiar Reaper NPC.
These tasks cover activities such as combat, skilling and exploration, with successful completions earning entries into a prize draw.
Rewards include:
- Official Old School RuneScape merchandise and skilling pins
- Themed skateboard decks
- A Starforge PC bundle
- A God Wars replica collection
- An exclusive Death NPC trophy
Jagex is also recognising World First achievements, giving players additional reasons to push themselves and attempt difficult milestones.
The Reaper’s Raffle winners are scheduled to be drawn during a special livestream on 8 December 2026.
A New Challenge for RuneScape Veterans
The arrival of Hardcore Worlds gives returning players and long-time veterans another way to experience Gielinor.
For some, the appeal will be reaching familiar milestones without dying. Others may attempt ambitious boss encounters, explore dangerous areas or compete to achieve major accomplishments before anyone else.
Unlike standard gameplay, where death is often a temporary setback, every encounter now carries additional weight.
The introduction of trading also creates a different experience from the existing Hardcore Ironman challenge, allowing players to cooperate and develop an economy without removing the consequences of death.
How to Play Old School RuneScape Hardcore Worlds
Hardcore Worlds launched on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, and are available as a permanent addition to Old School RuneScape.
Players need a new character that has not yet completed Tutorial Island. During the tutorial, they can speak to Death’s Delegate to begin the process of entering the new worlds.
Old School RuneScape is available on PC, Steam, iOS and Android, with cross-platform progression and play.
For adventurers confident enough to risk everything, Hardcore Worlds offers a new test of patience, skill and survival.
The only question is: how long can you stay alive?
