Underkeep Brings ’90s Dungeon Crawling Back to PC on 5 November

Fans of classic role-playing adventures are in for a nostalgic treat as indie developer Rake in Grass prepares to launch Underkeep, a fantasy dungeon crawler inspired by some of the genre’s most beloved games.

The golden age of dungeon-crawling RPGs is making a comeback. Underkeep, the upcoming adventure from Czech indie studio Rake in Grass, is set to launch on 5 November 2026 for Windows PC via Steam and GOG.

Drawing inspiration from legendary titles such as Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore and Wizardry, Underkeep aims to recreate the atmosphere of classic 1990s role-playing games while introducing modern controls and quality-of-life improvements.

Featuring hand-drawn artwork, tactical turn-based battles and a carefully crafted fantasy world, the game promises a nostalgic journey filled with exploration, challenging encounters and hidden secrets.

Assemble Your Party and Venture into the Unknown

At the heart of Underkeep is a party of four adventurers, each bringing their own abilities and spells into battle.

Players will be able to develop their characters, upgrade their equipment and experiment with different combinations of skills to create a party capable of tackling increasingly dangerous encounters.

Equipment also plays an important role, with special properties that can influence combat strategies and open up new possibilities for character builds.

With dozens of different monsters to encounter, success will depend on understanding enemy weaknesses and making the most of each adventurer’s abilities.

A World Filled with Secrets and Danger

Underkeep isn’t just about fighting monsters.

Players will explore a fantasy landscape featuring forests, open plains, treacherous swamps and forgotten underground dungeons, all presented through detailed hand-drawn visuals.

Along the way, they’ll encounter unusual inhabitants, discover quests, collect valuable items and navigate environmental puzzles and traps.

Exploration follows a traditional grid-based movement system, remaining faithful to the games that inspired it.

Choices made throughout the adventure can also influence what happens next, giving players additional reasons to pay attention to the world around them.

Classic Gameplay with Modern Conveniences

Although Underkeep embraces its retro roots, the developers have introduced several modern features designed to make the experience more accessible.

Players can choose between mouse and keyboard controls or a controller, making it possible to enjoy the adventure from a desktop or the comfort of a sofa.

Rake in Grass estimates that the game will offer approximately 15–20 hours of gameplay, with plenty of secrets and challenging encounters to discover.

The studio, also known for Rampage Knights and the Jets’n’Guns series, has built Underkeep as a tribute to the RPG adventures its developers grew up playing.

When Does Underkeep Release?

Underkeep launches on 5 November 2026 for Windows PC through Steam and GOG.

A playable demo is available on Steam for anyone interested in trying the game ahead of its full release.

The developers have also confirmed plans for a Nintendo Switch version, currently targeting the first quarter of 2027.

With its combination of nostalgic visuals, tactical combat and traditional dungeon exploration, Underkeep could be one to watch for players who miss the golden age of classic PC RPGs.
